Home Care Provider Teams Warn That Winter Poses Health Risks To Seniors

Nov 30, 2018 by Garrett Hafler

As it starts to get cold outside, older adults do run a risk of injuries and health problems related to the weather. It is important your loved one and those who take care of them pay special attention and take precautions to keep them safe. Your loved one’s home care provider wants to warn you about some health hazards to avoid.

Frostbite can cause damage to your loved one’s skin and then progress down into the bone. This condition affects the cheeks, ears, nose, fingers, toes, and chin. In serious situations, frostbite can result in the loss of limbs. Some of the common symptoms of frostbite include ashy, white, or grayish-yellow skin, numb areas, and skin that feels hard.

Hypothermia is when the body’s temperature falls beneath 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The body is unable to produce enough energy to warm up at this point. Elderly individuals are more susceptible to this condition because they may not be able to speak or tell you their symptoms. Some of the most common symptoms include slowed reactions, weakness, mental confusion, and sleepiness.

Painful joints occur in the winter and your loved one’s home care provider wants to warn you about it. Many people with arthritis experience stiffness and pain in their joints when the weather outside changes. It is unknown why, but daily exercise can help alleviate and prevent some of the pain.

Heart attack and high blood pressure are much more common in the winter due to the cold increasing blood pressure and strain on your heart. Since your heart must work hard, home care provider experts warn that heart attacks and high blood pressure readings can happen.

Comfort Keepers home care provider team is here to help your loved one get through the winter safely. Remember, your senior should stay dry, stay indoors, and wear layers when they do leave the house.
