Eating Disorders: Senior Home Care Experts Warn About Them

Feb 15, 2018 by Garrett Hafler

If we were to ask you about eating disorders, what would be the first thing that comes to your mind? Society would have us all believe that eating disorders lie within the teenage crowd and mostly affect girls. This is not always true, and it is important to understand that eating disorders can affect seniors too. Senior home care experts warn that seniors may have an eating disorder that goes undetected for a period of time due to their ability to hide it.

As your senior starts to get older and age, he or she may not know how to deal with the situation that well or they may experience bouts of depression or loneliness. Senior home care teams recommend that you speak with your loved one to ensure they do not feel lonely or depressed.

Signs of an eating disorder can be very subtle, especially if you are not around your beloved senior to see the symptoms. Our senior home care team wants to familiarize you with some of the signs below:

  • Constant stomach problems
  • Trips to the bathroom immediately after a meal or snack
  • Extreme sensitivity to cold weather and outside temperatures
  • Changes in weight, especially those that occur in a short timeframe
  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Dramatic weight loss
  • Change in behavior, especially during or after meals

Professionals suggest that you sit down and talk with your loved one should you have any concerns about their eating habits. You should try to keep calm as you do bring up the issue, as it may be sensitive for them or they may feel like you are attacking them.
